Overview:
The Lung Physiology Masterclass Series 3, organized by Persatuan Pendidikan Kesihatan Paru-Paru, successfully took place from the 19th to the 20th of April 2024. The event aimed to enhance the understanding and practical skills of participants in various aspects of lung physiology, catering to a diverse group including respiratory fellows, medical doctors, nurses, and medical lab technicians.
Day 1 - Virtual Webinar:
The first day of the masterclass was conducted virtually via Zoom, accommodating 50 participants. Distinguished speakers delivered insightful lectures on fundamental topics in lung physiology:
Topics |
Speaker |
Spirometry – Basics |
Dr Wan JL |
Lung volume measurements (body plethysmography, multiple breath nitrogen washout) |
Dr. Kumaresh Raj Lachmanan |
Carbon monoxide diffusion capacity (DLCO) |
Dr. Wong Chee Kuan |
Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) |
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Andrea Ban Yu-Lin |
Impulse Oscillometry (IOS) |
Dr. Soo Chun Ian |
Methacholine Challenge Test |
Dr. Arvindran Alaga |
MEP and MIP |
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Arif Mohd Zim |
The webinar sessions were interactive, providing a comprehensive theoretical foundation essential for clinical practice and research in respiratory medicine.
Day 2 – Hands-On Session:
The second day transitioned to a practical, hands-on experience held at Hospital Al Sultan Abdullah, UiTM Puncak Alam, with 20 participants in attendance. The session was facilitated by experienced clinicians:
1. Dr Aisya Natasya Bt Musa (UiTM)
2. Dr Affida Binti Ahmad (UiTM)
3. Dr Muhammad Amin Bin Ibrahim (KPJ Selangor)
4. Dr Tan Hui-Xin (Hospital Sg Buloh)
5. Dr Soo Chun Ian (UM)
Participants engaged in practical stations focusing on:
1. Spirometry (including performance and interpretation)
2. Impulse Oscillometry System (IOS) demonstration
3. Body plethysmography
4. Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO)
5. Case-based discussions to reinforce learning outcomes\
The practical session allowed attendees to apply the knowledge gained from the previous day's lectures in a clinical setting, promoting skill development and proficiency in lung function testing and analysis.
Conclusion:
The Lung Physiology Masterclass Series 3 was a resounding success, providing valuable educational opportunities and fostering collaboration among healthcare professionals in the field of respiratory medicine. Participants benefited from both theoretical insights and practical applications, equipping them with enhanced competencies to deliver superior patient care and advance research in lung physiology.
